Great news! The sales tax exemption for Habitat for Humanity affiliates is official. Beginning July 1, 2005, Habitat for Humanity affiliates are exempt from paying sales tax on the purchase of all building materials.

You must present the following certificate and letter to retailers to receive the sales tax exemption:

• Iowa Sales Tax Exemption Certificate. (Click here to download a copy.) You will need to use this certificate with each retailer you work with. To complete the form, fill in the purchaser and seller information, check the box that says “other” under the “Purchaser is doing business as a:” section, and write in “Housing Organization” in the blank space. Then under “Purchaser is claiming exemption for the following Reason:” again check “other” and in this blank write in “House File 856.”
